The Last Day of the Year Past

Fired by life!

The Last Day of the Year Past  is puppet theatre for adults with grotesque and poetic beauty, soulful music and fire, story inspired by Little match maid by H.C. Andersen and tales of the homeless people.

Story is told almost without words, with human size puppet the Woman and her manipulator, the Angel. Who are they and why are they here? We saw glimpses of woman’s hopes, fears and joys in flames. All the memories twine together to one particular New Year’s Eve, burning home, smoldering despair and the flames that burn away the wings of the angel.

Puppets, objects, live fire and music are in focus in The Last Day of the Year Past. These elements form a visual, intense and fragile moment, moment between the last day of the Old Year and the first day of the New Year.

”Many-sided Last Day of the Year Past is puppet theatre for adults as it’s very best. It feels even that it’s the last day of the World, so strikingly good is the atmosphere of apocalypse and ending of everything brought to the stage. The way that Merja Pöyhönen is skillfully manipulating the puppet -at the same time rough and determinate and yet gentle and soft-  forms special bond between the two women( puppet and manipulator) and makes the puppet breathtakingly alive.”

- Janica Vilen, Kaupunkiuutiset

"Last Day of the Year Past shows us distinctive and intuitive director Pia Kalenius. Piece is visual-acoustic poem on the stage that leaves room for viewers."
